The Greater Commonwealth of Systems [WIP] Flag_of_the_Commonwealth_of_Nations

Formal Name: Greater Commonwealth of Systems.
Informal Names: The Commonwealth. Commonwealth of Systems. Greater Commonwealth.
Abbreviation: GCS
Population: 6,370,800,000

6,140,130,000 (Human)
230,670,000 (Ephan)

Starting Fleet:

x1 Dreadnought - HMS Defiance
x2 Carriers - HMS London, HMS Glasgow
x3 Escort Cruisers - HMS Canberra, HMS Kingston, HMS Toronto
x5 Battlecruisers - HMS Waterloo, HMS Trafalgar, HMS Hastings, HMS Normandy, HMS El Alamein

Species: Humans: Primarily descended from the subjects of Commonwealth Nations such as Australia, Canada and of course the United Kingdom. Approximately 58% of the population is Caucasian, 27.5% African, 9.5% Asian (Primarily from India and Pakistan) and the remaining 5% ranging from various other backgrounds.

Ephan: The Ephan are a bipedal race of humanoids that, surprisingly, are not native to Churchill. Instead, it is believed that they evolved on a planet of slightly less density than that on Earth, causing them to be taller and slender in nature. Possessing two arms and two legs, they stand at an average height of approximately 6'5, and generally appear to be of a lighter build than Humans.

Whilst warm-blooded, like mammals, the Ephan have a tough layer of leathery, almost reptillian skin, which appears to have been an evolutionary response to their homeworld's weaker magnetic field. As a result, they are capable of inhabitating environments in which exposure to harmful elements such as UV Radiation would be a problem for Humans with no noticable effects, and on the few occasions that damage to cells is done, it appears that their body has developed a unique method of repairing these damaged cells over the course the following night cycle. They are also somewhat resistant to being lacerated by metal implements, though conventional firearms tend to have no more difficulty in injuring them than they would a human being.

Their brain structure is somewhat comparable to that of Human structure, though at the same time there are some significant differences. Whilst they can to an extent understand the concept of certain behaviours and emotions such as anger and sadness, others such as jealousy and humour are somewhat more difficult to understand, which has led to difficulties in communication in the past. The Ephan also appear to be slightly more intelligent than the average Humans, having scored an average of 118 during IQ testing.

Systems:

Capital - 08L - Elizabeth System
Elizabeth: A G-Type main sequence Yellow Dwarf Star just about half-way through its lifespan with approximately 1.04 times the Sun's mass and 1.07 times it's luminosity.
Elizabeth I: A rocky planet approximately twice Earth's size, it lacks any semblance of an atmosphere with one side enduring scorching hot temperatures and the other remaining at a simple zero degrees. The only civilised presence here is a series of automated mining facilities built underground to extract deposits of metals and other important resources such as iron, copper and diamond.
Elizabeth II: Mars-sized body with a thin atmosphere of nitrogen and water vapour, the temperatures never plummet below 67 degrees Celsius and can skyrocket to an average peak of 84 degrees. The lack of volcanic activity within the planet has also resulted in a weak magnetic field, leading to the surface being exposed to regular doses of Ultraviolet Radiation, rendering the planet completely inhospitable to life altogether. Several communication outposts have been constructed on and in orbit of the planet, though no permanent colonies are in place here.
Churchill: Refer to the Churchill section.
Arctica: Teetering on the outer borders of the habitable zone, Arctica is an Earth-sized frozen world with an atmosphere primarily consisting of traces of carbon dioxide, argon and nitrogen, temperatures frequently drop below minus 68 degrees Celsius. A few permanent colonies altogether numbering just over half a billion are dotted across the surface.
Elizabeth V: A Gas Dwarf with an atmosphere consisting primarily of hydrogen with smaller traces of helium, it is of little specific value but is orbited by several small moons and asteroids which are often exploited for their resources.
Hawking: The largest moon of Elizabeth V, Hawking is approximately 0.74 times Earth's mass and 0.67 times its size. The weaker magnetic field and radiation belt of its parent planet makes it more hospitable than some of the other terrestrial bodies in the system and a thick atmosphere of greenhouse gasses raises the moon's temperature to about zero degrees Celsius, enabling individuals to walk on the surface unaided provided that they wear the appropriate breathing apparatus.  It is home to a number of colonies numbering just under a billion and serves as a hub for the extraction of resources from Elizabeth V's moons.
Mandela: Jovian Gas Giant with approximately 1.18 times Jupiter's mass and a slightly lower density 0.97 times the original, Mandela is the largest planet in the system with over 87 moons in orbit. Its atmosphere is comprised primarily of hydrogen and helium, making it a suitable candidate for extraction of helium-3 for the vital purpose of fuelling fusion based technology such as modern starship engines, and as such there are numerous extraction and processing facilities within its orbit. In addition, its many moons have been exploited over the centuries for important metals such as gold.
Mandela I: The sixth-closest moon to the Jovian Gas Giant, Mandela I is regularly exposed to lethal doses of radiation and is covered in a thin atmosphere of carbon dioxide, rendering it unsuited for surface colonisation. However, beneath the thick sheets of ice coating the moon is a layer of subsurface ocean enabled by high concentrations of salts in the briny waters and the presence of undersea volcanic vents. Not unlike Europa, primitive life has been found under the ice and as such the moon is a scientific curiosity, acting as the home to several scientific outposts and institutions including a permanent colony of just over 20 million.
Mandela II: Analog to Callisto, Mandela II is an icy moon dotted with numerous impact craters from past collisions with debris pulled in by the Gas Giant's gravitational field. Whilst it is still exposed to regular doses of radiation which can be fatal in large amounts, the thick sheets of ice and rocky deposits underground are more than suited to underground colonisation and as such a population of almost 380 million is supported on the planet alongside a number of mining and processing facilities. It is also considered a special administrative region under the independent control of the Ephan.
Mandela III: Rocky moon with a thick atmosphere of sulfur and sulfur dioxide, Mandela III's surface is wrought with volcanic activity. As a result, it possesses a strong magnetic field which when coupled with the thick atmosphere protects it from the powerful radiation belt of Mandela. Unfortunately, this same volcanic activity renders the surface geologically unstable and consequentally unsuitable for colonisation, for a large number of mining facilities have been constructed around the moon for the purpose of exploiting its iron-rich material deposits.
Mandela IV: At present, Mandela IV is a rocky moon with an ever-changing atmosphere of nitrogen and carbon dioxide of approximately 0.89 times the Earth's mass and 0.92 times its size with low temperatures ranging from zero to minus fifteen degrees. However, the moon is currently undergoing a long-term terraforming effort to raise these temperatures through the gradual introduction of more carbon and in recent times, water vapour, with the eventual result being a habitable body outside of the inner system. Mandela IV's distance and moderately powerful magnetic field has spared the surface from being exposed to large amounts of radiation. As of present there are numerous permanent colonies totalling up to approximately 2.17 billion, making it the second largest colony outside of Churchill.
Elizabeth VII: A Neptunian Gas Dwarf of very little value, lying at the furthest edges of the system before the asteroid belt with an atmospheric composition of mostly hydrogen and very little helium.
Asteroid Belt: The boundaries of the system are marked by an asteroid belt made up of thousands of asteroids and minor dwarf planets, some of which are presently being exploited for their resources by private corporations.

Homeworld Name: Churchill
Homeworld Location: 08L
Homeworld Description:

The Greater Commonwealth of Systems [WIP] RbNloC9

Named in honour of the famous wartime leader, Churchill is often dubbed a so-called 'garden world' due to it's habitability to Humans and and other Earth-like species. At approximately 1.09 times the Earth's mass, 1.1 times its radius and a surface gravity of 1.04g, it possesses an atmosphere and atmospheric pressure to that of Earth's, albeit with a slightly more concentrated level of oxygen due to a lack of deforestation efforts by resident species. In addition, the planet's magnetic field is highly similar, if not only insignificantly stronger than Earth's, which has led to Colonial Administration Agencies dubbing it a rare jewel of a 'Goldilocks Planet' like those spoken of in century old scientific articles.

Orbiting Elizabeth, a G-Type main sequence Yellow Dwarf Star just about half-way through its lifespan with approximately 1.04 times the Sun's mass and 1.07 times it's luminosity, the planet experiences a 357-day year and a 22-hour day-night cycle due to it's slightly lower rotation, though this has caused few problems save for the inconvenience of having to record the time and date seperately from Solar standards. As one would expect of a planet with such Earth-like qualities, the surface temperatures are known to be rather varied, though they are generally similar, if not only a few degrees different to Earth's temperatures. Seasons similar to Winter and Summer are quite easily found on the planet.

Approximately 72% of the planet is covered by water in the form of great oceans and lakes with their own diverse ecosystems, with the remaining 28% of landmass varying wildly in regards to climate, terrain and ecosystems. The planet is believed to be experiencing a Paleogene era, and vast forests similar to those of the Congo or the Amazonian Rainforest cover a number of regions across the planet, whilst far Northern regions are still covered by arctic tundras, with unique species of wildlife having evolved to survive and adapt to such environments. Whilst numerous species of wildlife are entirely different to those found on Earth, avian and reptilian analogies in particular appear to be highly similar to those found on Earth. Surprisingly however, no sapient species native to the environment has yet to be found, with the few primate analogies being very similar to those of early primates on Earth, well before the stages of hominids or so.

Churchill has two moons in its orbit; X57 Darwin and Newton. Whilst X57 Darwin is merely an asteroid of a similar size to Deimos that was trapped in it's distant orbit a few million years ago, Newton apears to have formed around the same time as Churchill and is approximately 0.94 times that of Luna's mass and 0.87 times it's radius, generating a slightly weaker level of surface gravity. Covered in great sheets of ice, the moon is considered to have few natural resources worthy of extracting save for small deposits of Helium-3, and is instead used as a stopping point for traffic heading towards and away from Churchil and the Elizabeth II Shipyards.

Political System: Unitary Parliamentary Constitutional Monarchy.
Economical System: Free economy with both capitalist and socialist elements.

Culture:

Many social and cultural elements from the 20th and 21st centuries have survived the passing ages and have remained as a core component of Commonwealth society, from popular sporting events such as football or cricket to seasonal festivities such as Yule, Easter Sunday and Saint George's Day. Whilst still in place, most religious faiths such as the Church of England and Islam have rapidly declined in favor of an agnostic-realist view of affairs and it is often an unspoken rule in political and military affairs that such matters are left undiscussed on official channels.

Whilst once there was a time when the Ephan and Humans regarded each other with caution and distrust, the common ground of losing one's homeworld and expressing a distrust towards outsiders is one of the foundations which led to a social harmony between the two races, despite their different social cues and castes, and so the two are often seen working side by side in modern society without any hint of racial or social tension.

Attitudes towards issues which were once controversial in the early 21st century, such as homosexuality, transgenderism and abortion have essentially become entirely relaxed and forgotten about save for the most conservative and isolated of social castes, and instead modern issues have been focussed towards the matters of xenophobia, transhumanism and a revived era of expansionism. With the Human homeworld of Earth decimated as a direct consequence of supporting a motion to directly attack the Alarei homeworld, most prefer to advocate the defence of one's own territories and the exhibition of caution towards outsiders as opposed to fuelling resources into total war.

It is also due to this somewhat withdrawn attitude towards war that scientific progress has taken precendent in modern society, and the Commonwealth is oft regarded as one of the leading human nations in technological and scientific discovery, with many organisations proudly displaying their roots back to the Darwin Research Facility on Europa before its evacuation in the wake of Black Friday, and the subsequent Darwin Institute of Science and Technology founded within the Commonwealth's new home system in 2187.

Active Military: 15,000,000
Reserve Military (Territorial Armed Forces): 68,000,000
Military Details: The Armed Forces have remained mostly unchanged from their roots in Great Britain in terms of structure and organisation. However, changing times and technology have led to the adoption of new tactics and equipment. For example, the gradual introduction of airstrikes and orbital bombardments by unmanned craft has often led to military personell being assigned to supporting roles, maintaining such equipment and providing a more logistical role, and the lack of increase in militarisation in favor of scientific and social pursuits has seen a downfall in interest in the armed forces.

However, this has not led to the complete redundancy of personell in combat, as an organic element that no autonomous unit could replace will always be required. Examples include the Royal Marines and the Special Forces, which is still infamous for its gruelling selection and training regimen which lasts for approximately eighteen months, taking place over a number of hostile environments including the Hazardous Environment Training Facility on Mandela IV. Ephan are allowed to serve in the Commonwealth Armed Forces, though they are often equipped with seperate forms of armour and weaponry to suit their phisiology, and often are deployed in smaller numbers alongside Human units.

Ballistic weaponry is still heavily employed, though some units utilise energy weaponry derived from Ephan research. Environmentally sealed suits of armour with a powered exoskeleton are considered to be standard issue to active infantry units in order to operate in all manner of environments in the modern combat zone, whilst armoured vehicles, tanks and mechanized units are readily available for deployment to any combat zone.

Uniforms
Officer Service Uniform
A comfortable BDU for use by officers of all departments of the Commonwealth Military.

Battle Dress Uniform
A uniform for use by enlisted Army personnel or officers when needed. Comes in all available camouflage patterns.

Naval Dress Uniform
Uniform for enlisted Naval personell and officers when needed.

Service Dress Uniform
Ceremonial and formal uniforms worn by enlisted personell.

Camouflage

Chameleon
Originally concieved in the mid-21st Century for Special Ops units across the West, the Chameleon is a form of Smart Camoflague which appears to replicate the pattern and in more advanced models, the texture of any surface it comes into contact with, in addition to replicating pre-programmed patterns and designs. However, the decline of infantry warfare in favour of unmanned warfare led to the original research and prototypes being shelved, up until the 2130's in which the Commonwealth chose to revive the concept for applications among the Special Forces and vehicle units. These newer variants are also capable of applying thermal technology to regulate the temperature of the disguised subject to better blend with the surrounding environment and to evade thermal imaging systems.

Multi-Terrain
A modern Multi-Terrain camoflague pattern which acted as the successor to the older Woodland DPM.

URBCAM
An urban camouflage pattern based on gray and dark blue.

Desert
Having seen extensive use in the Middle East during the late 20th and early 21st Centuries, this particular camoflague pattern has typically seen continuous use in modern times.

Ice
An ice environment based pattern, generally utilised during training exercises on moons and the outer planets.

Sidearms

SIG P320
Deadly .50 caliber pistol, utilised as the standard sidearm among NCOs and above.

Assault Rifles

H&K G12 Battle Rifle
Decade-old railgun, but nevertheless standard issue in the armed forces. Powerful, but can not fire automatic or burst.

BAE Systems SA40
The SA40 (Small Arms for the 40s) is a BAE manufactured combat carbine that fires the 5.56x45mm railgun cartridge. It serves as the standard infantry rifle among troops.

'Vanghir'
Named after an ancient Ephan deity, the Vanghir is a prototype energy weapon based on earlier Ephan designs with several Human improvements and modifications. Where other energy-based weapon designs suffer from overheating and efficiency problems, the Vanghir appears to have overcome these design flaws via a combination of Ephan technology and Human ingenuity. However, it has yet to see regular service and is seldom seen in actual use, as at present the weapon requires specific training to correctly operate and is viewed as somewhat ineffective against many forms of modern armours.

Sniper Rifles

H&K 'Lambda'
An unconventional rifle, the 'Lambda' fires 7.62x51mm antipersonnel rounds, and is fully automatic.

Light/Medium Vehicles

Force Protection Ocelot 'Foxhound' Mk. IV
Originally deployed in the early 21st Century to replace the older Snatch Land Rover models as a modular light patrol vehicle built to protect the occupants against roadside explosives, the Foxhound still finds use amongst the Commonwealth's Armed Forces as a light patrol vehicle and has seen few major design changes from its original designs, save for accomodating a pressurised environment in hostile environments and utilising a hydrogen combustion-based engine as opposed to earlier fossil fuel dependent models. Typically, the Foxhound is gradually being phased out in favour of newer, efficient models, though it is still heavily used in training operations and civilian agencies.

BAE Systems M221 'Lima' Infantry Fighting Vehicle
The Lima is a hybrid between an IFV and an APC, sacrificing some of its armor for mobility and crew capacity. Its main weapon is its 40mm Coil Anti-Tank Cannon, a heavy armor-piercing weapon that allows it to provide covering fire even against enemy tanks. The M2/R .50 caliber railgun mounted near the hatch can support troops at almost any range.

Heavy Vehicles

Challenger 5
Descended from the Challenger 1 and 2 Tanks of the late 20th Century, the Challenger 5 has proven itself to be a worthy successor to its ancestors.

Mechs

BAE Systems LM-02 'Raptor'
An aging mech that has seen over fourty years of service, the Raptor was one of BAE Systems' first combat mech designs and performed so well that it is still used by some units today. Whilst lacking the heavy armour of later designs and lacking the capacity to house a pilot in favour of unmanned controls and autonomous AI units, it has served well as a light vehicle and is well-known for it's mobility compared to other mechs at the time. In addition to the railgun mounted on its chassis, the Raptor possesses two retractible gatling cannons, a rotating peripheral which enables the 'painting' of targets and three rear boosters which enable the mech to achieve brief flight and stabilise landings when deployed from aircraft.

BAE Systems AM-08 'Churchill'
The Churchill is an all-purpose combat mech which has seen more mass-production than any other model of mech in the Commonwealth, due to it's efficiency and the relatively low cost to produce such models. Featuring a pair of 20mm gatling guns, missile pods and a rotating overhead dual-barrel anti-armour cannon, it is highly effective at holding its own in combat and is useful against infantry, light vehicles and even armoured vehicles, in larger numbers. It is an unmanned mech, however, and is either controlled by an AI Unit or actual personell via remote use.

BAE Systems AM-10 'Rex'
Dubbed by many as the 'true' successor to the Raptor, the Rex takes numerous design cues from its predecessor and heavily improves upon them. Where the Raptor lacked the heavy armour of modern mech vehicles, the Rex appears to have sacrificed a small amount of mobility in order to keep up with competitors' designs and features a somewhat bulkier, yet stronger chassis. Another significant change from the original Raptor design was the addition of a cockpit housing up to two crew members but capable of operating with just one. Alongside the railgun which has seen virtually no changes from the original Raptor design, the Rex possesses a pair of 20mm gatlings and anti-tank cannons. It also houses a series of missile pods at the rear, whilst recent updates to the design have incorporated a prototype laser weapon based on Ephan designs. Unlike the Raptor, it possesses only a single booster at the rear for the purpose of performing brief 'jumps' and stabilising itself during airborne deployment.

Aerospace Superiority - Fighters

Lockheed Martin F-18/E 'Cobra' Strike Fighter
The Cobra is a fourty-year old fighter design that has been rendered obsolete by advancements in the field of armour and weaponry and so it is being gradually phased out in favor of the Eurofighter Cyclone. Nevertheless, it remains a highly popular aircraft and the vast warehouses filled to the brim with the machines mean that as long as there are pilots to fly them, the Commonwealth can afford to send wave after wave of them against the enemy. They are most effective inside a planet's atmosphere, where their airplane-like design allows them to take advantage of air resistance instead of fighting against it. The F-18/E is the newest and most modernized edition of the craft, upgrading the outdated F-18/D.

Eurofighter Cyclone
Slated as the distant ancestor of the Typhoon, the Eurofighter Cyclone is one of the Commonwealth's newest pieces of military equipment having only seen active service in the past five years. Its sleek design is intended to make it a small target for dumb-firing weaponry whilst also enabling it to perform tight manoeuvres to evade hostile aircraft. It is fitted with a variety of modern armaments and is designed with recent improvements to armour and weaponry in mind, making it even more of a formidable opponent against older targets. However, their newer minimalist design has also rendered them less effective within a planet's atmosphere due to increased air resistance, henceforth they have mostly seen deployment in environments exposed to the vacuum of space.

Bombers

Boeing F-5 'Eagle' Fighter-Bomber
The decade-old fighter-bomber focuses heavily on the delivery of conventional explosives on vulnurable ships, or the precision bombing of airfields and tactical targets. Nevertheless, it is very much capable of the delivery of nuclear warheads, if the mission requires it, and some of the craft have been modified with ports to facilitate the deployment of target painters for nukes.

Boeing B-23 'Raven' Stratobomber
One bomber to rule them all. The FTL-capable Raven is capable of maintaining its stealth for days, navigating its way around enemy strongholds and defensive perimeters. Once it is in place, all is lost: it can carry enough nuclear warheads to level a country, or destroy a dreadnought. Its speed leaves much to be desired, however, and the FTL drive requires long cooldowns before being able to jump again.

Utility

Boeing CH-48 'Chetco' VTOL
The Boeing CH-48 is named after the people of Chetco, a native Oregon tribe, and is the space capable offspring of the CH-47 Chinook. It is an ancient but notoriously reliable vehicle, having served in almost every armed conflict in the past forty years, and many of them are used as civilian cargo transports. Up to two main battle tanks, or fourty troops, can fit comfortably inside the hold of a CH-48. It is powered by a fusion reactor and uses a Buzzard scoop to use as reaction mass, giving it an almost unlimited range. Sometimes, the transports are refitted with an FTL drive to ferry cargo between systems.

Boeing AH-12 'Slingshot' Gunship
The Slingshot is the exact opposite of the Chetco. Agile and armed, it is meant to provide cover for ground troops with a huge arsenal of weaponry, such as rail cannons, missiles and artillery turrets. It can carry a small squad of marines inside it, for rapid deployments, and is fueled by hydrogen fuel cells to give it unpararelled agility when it comes to assault gunships.
