| (Still subject to WIP) Formal Name: The Union of the Commonwealth. Informal Names: Commonwealth, Abbreviation: UoC Population:Aprox. 1,920,193,913 Humans at last count Aprox. 6,812,403,742 Native Rakhan at last count (Not inc. isolated clans) Technology Tags:Shipbuilding:Starship Engines:Scientific Research:Species: Humans:Descendants of Earth’s exiles, the Humans of the UoC vary in ethnicity with origins dating back to countries formerly under the Commonwealth Charter such as Britain, Australia, Canada, India and so on. The lifespan of the average human living under the UoC is 185 years. Culture:Many social and cultural elements from the 20th and 21st centuries have survived the passing ages and have remained as a core component of society, from popular sporting events such as football or cricket to seasonal festivities such as Christmas, Easter Sunday and Saint George's Day. Whilst largely intact, most religious faiths such as the CoE have rapidly declined in favor of an agnostic-realist view of affairs and it is often an unspoken rule in political and military affairs that such matters are left undiscussed on official channels. In addition to this, the Monarchy remains in effect; albeit with effectively zero power beyond ceremonial matters, yet this has not prevented past monarchs from playing a role in national affairs. As of present, Queen Elizabeth III is the current monarch. Attitudes towards issues which were once controversial in the early 21st century, such as homosexuality, transgenderism and abortion have essentially become entirely relaxed and forgotten about save for the most conservative and isolated of social castes, and instead modern issues have been focussed towards the matters of xenophobia, transhumanism and a revived era of expansionism. With Earth decimated as a direct consequence of supporting a motion to directly attack the Alarei homeworld, most prefer to advocate the defence of one's own territories and the exhibition of caution towards potential threats as opposed to funneling resources into total war. It is also due to this somewhat withdrawn attitude towards war that scientific progress has taken precedent in modern society, and the UoC is oft regarded as one of the leading nations in technological and scientific discovery, with many organisations proudly displaying their roots back to the Darwin Research Facility on Europa before its evacuation in the wake of Black Friday, and the subsequent Darwin Institute of Science and Technology founded within the UoC’s in 2207. RakhanRobust in nature, the Rakhan are a semi-bipedal species of vertebrates with an anatomy well-suited to Sanctuary’s climate and terrain, with two pairs of arms and a single pair of powerful legs that possess prehensile feet. Their bone and muscular structure are slightly denser than that of the average human’s in a natural response to their planet’s slightly higher gravity and in order to support their weight and movements. When fully upright, their average height is typically about 6’5 though this is typically counteracted by the fact that when moving rapidly they use both their legs and their lower arms to quickly cross distances. Consequently, they possess three lungs and a pair of hearts in order to better deliver oxygen and blood to their system and whilst this has the advantage of allowing them to perform better in comparison to humans it also means their oxygen intake is greater; making low-oxygen environments often fatal for unequipped individuals (Studies have shown that Earth’s conditions would be deemed markedly uncomfortable for the species due to this) and making them more susceptible to unfiltered air supplies. Meanwhile, their heads consist of strong pair of eyes (With eyesight approximately 6 times stronger than that of a human) guarded by two sets of eyelids, four nostril-like orifices which serve as a breathing passage, a set of mandibles covered by three lips and two horn-like appendages near the back of the skull that serve as ears. Additionally, due to the hotter climate of their native homeworld, the Rakhan have a natural form of heat dissipation yet this comes at a cost of being unsuited to colder climates, forcing them to wear suitable apparatus when exploring such regions. They also give birth to live infants - though pregnancies typically last approximately seventeen months. Whilst the introduction of advanced technology over the past few centuries has greatly improved their lifespan, few Rakhan live beyond the age of 130 years. Culture: The Rakhan have a heavily clan-based society where so called 'clanmates' are united under a shared identity, history and cultural values in addition to an intense loyalty towards each other. Unlike humans, Rakhan do not place an emphasis on familial biological ties, instead regarding their respective clans as the closest analog to human families - a concept which some Rakhan also confuse with their own clan-based ties. To be named 'clanless' is to be distrusted, and is considered an insult in Rakhan society; one who lacks a permanent tie to a respective clan can only be trusted to keep their own interests in mind. These clans can range in populations from fifteen to fifty thousand and are presided over by a chief elected to power by their respective clanmates. Once elected, the chief's power is absolute, their word deemed to carry the greatest weight and is often the final say when matters of debate remain contested. This reign lasts until either the chief chooses to step down or under unusual circumstances in which is the chief is removed from power after a majority agreement of clanmates. In turn, Rakhan government is ruled over by a council of chiefs hailing from dominant clans whilst a single unifying authority known as the high chief, whose position is elected by the council, is considered the greatest power. Again, these figures may step down upon choosing to do so or when their peers determine their removal is necessary. As expected, clanmates are loyal to one another but that does not necessarily mean they will automatically regard each other as friends. Rather, it is their duty to protect their own. Likewise, inter-clan relationships are not uncommon and in the best circumstances close friends may regard each other as honorary clanmate whilst bondmates from differing clans offer the potential for an alliance between clans. Home System: Darwin - Spoiler:
Darwin: An orange dwarf of approximately 0.84 solar masses. Darwin I: A heat-blasted rock of about 0.08 Earth masses that just about classes as a planet. It's close proximity means that the planet is tidally locked to its parent star, leaving one side permanently scorched at 491°C whilst the other is kept in darkness at frozen temperatures. Darwin II (Sanctuary): Refer to the Sanctuary section. Darwin III: Saturnian gas giant of approximately 58 Earth masses. Possesses a large deposit of Helium-3 currently being exploited by a number of corporate enterprises. Darwin IV: Jovian gas giant of approximately 1.13 Jupiter masses. Whilst it possesses a respectable deposit of Helium-3, its gravity well and powerful magnetic field have left its natural resources untouched for the most part; its two moons are of more interest as of present. Darwin IVa: A hotbed of volcanic activity, the moon’s close distance to the planet means it is very active on a geological scale and as a result endured constant tremors and volcanic eruptions. This, combined with the lethal amount of surface exposure to radiation from the planet means it is suited only for automated machinery. Darwin IVb: A cold, barren rock almost twice Earth’s mass, Darwin IVb’s initial value can be seen in the helium-3 locked beneath its surface. Consequently, a number of extraction facilities (along with the colonies required to support the workforce) have popped up over the centuries and with the an industry which has since grown vital to the UoC’s economy, including the Admiral Nelson shipyards. Darwin IVc: Covered by a thick layer of ice with a subsurface ocean high in salinity, Darwin IVc has since become regarded as the heart of the UoC’s tech industry, with a number of scientific and technologically-minded organisations choosing the moon as their base of operations, due in no small part to its relative isolation and shielding from the surface by a thick layer of ice. It is here that the famous Darwin Institute of Science and Technology rests almost two miles under the ice.
Homeworld Name: Sanctuary Homeworld Location: 14 I Homeworld Description:Sanctuary sits towards the inner edge of it’s system’s habitable region with an average temperature of 23°C, giving it an arid and dryer quality in comparison to Earth. The day-night cycle lasts 26.4 hours while it takes just over six months for the planet to fully orbit its parent star. Its mass is also 1.43 times that of Earth’s with a radius approximately 7402km. To add to this, the planet's atmospheric composition is largely similar to Earth's with the a notable exception being a larger concentration of oxygen; 30.63% in comparison to Earth's 20.95, just a little under levels that would be otherwise overwhelming for human anatomy. That said, Sanctuary is far from a wasteland; a diverse variety of biota can be found across the planet. Coastal and island-based regions enjoy a warm but pleasant climate with conditions comparable to the Mediterranean or Caribbean and this is where a majority of population centers are located (Sanctum is currently the capital). Bands of fertile soil suitable for agriculture are found inland in regions which are wetter or otherwise closer to the coast along with tropical regions where rainforest is in abundance (A contributing factor to the large oxygen content), yet further from these wetter regions on the central continents the landscape transitions towards an open expanse of desert with major settlements few and far between; often causing locals to colloquially refer to such areas as the Outback. Snow, ice and other phenomena found in cold-weather conditions are are practically non-existent outside of the polar regions and tend to occur only during extreme seasonal conditions seen only once over the course of several decades, if ever in a century. Political System: Unitary Constitutional Monarchy. The Union's territories are divided up into separate provinces with names such as Ontario and South Wales; namesakes of the old nations which originally formed the Commonwealth in addition to existing Rakhan nations. History:- Spoiler:
The origins of the UoC date back to the presence of the Commonwealth of Nations, an international organisation comprised mostly of nations which had former territories of the British Empire. The Commonwealth held relatively little weight in comparison to powers such as NATO or the EU, but nonetheless it was an organisation which deserved recognition.
As it happened, the rise of fusion-based energy in the 21st century and the advent of space travel would eventually give the Commonwealth a new opportunity to gain weight in the new age for humanity. With the support of Britain, Australia, Canada (Also closely affiliated with the USC) and a number of other nations, the Second Commonwealth Charter was signed: intended to unify the nations’ efforts in their expansion onto the new frontier of space.
Much to the surprise of some, the charter was an astounding success; colonies were founded in its name under a set of agreed trade regulations and laws with technology shared among the different nations, so it would be of little surprise when a good portion of the UNSV Curie’s crew originated from nations who had signed the charter. Nor was it of any great wonder when, upon the discovery that humanity was not alone, the Commonwealth proved its willingness to push the species forward by contributing three of the twelve destroyers under the UNSC’s command.
It was during this time that the Darwin system was first discovered by an unmanned survey; an orange dwarf star with several planets in orbit. One of of them, it seemed, was deemed habitable enough for human colonisation yet at the time there was a particular issue to the matter: the planet was already inhabited by a native species of sapients. This species would soon be known as the Rakhan, a humanoid race with a post-industrial society equivalent to the mid-20th century.
Due to a number of restrictions imposed both by the charter and the council, the Commonwealth was careful in its approach to the Rakhan; first contact was a carefully planned out matter with the intention of establishing a moderate trade agreement before eventually integrating the planet into the dominion of the Commonwealth, both making the Rakhan its citizens whilst allowing humans to moderately colonise the planet. It was, for the most part, a successful plan; with the aid of the Commonwealth (though a few argued it as interference) the Rakhan were able to jumpstart their technology by several decades and in return it was given ‘permission’ to begin exploiting the resources of the rest of the system’s planets. It was a rather prosperous time and a peaceful one at that, yet not one that would last.
Tensions had already been high between Humanity and the Alarei, the situation only agitated by the ultranationalist slavic nations which had blatantly disregarded their treaty in favour of rapid expansion. When the Einstein Shipyards were attacked, the Commonwealth itself was almost divided; different nations debated heavily over what action should be taken and the decision to participate in the attack on the Alarei homeworld was almost vetoed by a close margin. Ultimately, it was their biggest mistake; Earth was promptly ruined in the following Black Wednesday and civil wars with Southern England almost entirely depopulated and Canada left a frozen wasteland whilst Australia was fought over by rival nations hoping to claim one of the few ‘untouched’ territories left on Earth.
Things seemed bleak, yet there was hope: survivors from the Commonwealth had managed to escape Sol in the ensuing chaos and ultimately found their retreat in the Darwin system, where their Rakhan allies remained. The Rakhan homeworld, which had a literal translation from their language as ‘Sanctuary’, was fittingly the last hope for the Commonwealth to resettle its displaced people whilst the last scraps of Earth and other colonies were fought over.
The Rakhan were wise enough to understand, at least, that humanity had the potential to elevate their species tenfold beyond what they had already been able to achieve with their aid and by extension, knew that in a position as desperate as theirs they were willing to claim it by force. A long, unending period of negotiation ensued until finally two could come to terms; the Rakhan would allow the Commonwealth to settle on their homeworld in exchange for being allowed to join the Commonwealth as independent nations in their own right, considered citizens of equal status with any other in addition to a few other minor agreements. The result of this was the Union of the Commonwealth.
Uneasy at first, the early days of the UoC were turbulous with refugees trickling in from outside the system whilst the newly forged alliance with the Rakhan remained tenuous due to xenophobic sentiment on both sides. However, many years passed by and with it, so did progress. Over the next few centuries, the UoC had plenty of time to resolve its initial issues and with time, integration had been a relative success. With a new age dawning, future events lay ahead.
In more recent times, the UoC remained more of a neutral power in the wake of rising tensions with the other nations; rather than directly involving its military in foreign matters, the UoC instead opted to assist its allies through economic and diplomatic backing. This allowed it to avoid the ensuing conflict for the most part, allowing it to maintain its place as a formidable nation.
Colonies Under Your Species Control: Newton- Spoiler:
Location: 12 E Newton: A main sequence orange dwarf of unremarkable properties, it is comprised of approximately 0.72 solar masses. Newton I: A lifeless rock of approximately 2.37 Earth masses, characterised by blistering temperatures on one side and frozen wastes on the other. Newton II: Oddly enough, this planet is an unusual analog of Earth, or was; traces of surface water indicate the planet once had oceans and fossil evidence indicates a past presence of complex organisms but if the impact craters and greenhouse atmosphere are anything to go by, its former inhabitants were rendered extinct by a series of impact events over several thousand years. Newton III: A saturnian gas-giant of approximately 105 Earth-masses, with large deposits of helium-3 ripe for extraction. Newton IIIa (Arctica): A terrestrial moon of almost 1.76 Earth masses, Arctica's temperatures range from an all-time high of -29 °C to lows which regularly plunge below -94°C whilst its atmosphere consists of a variety of compounds toxic to humans. Despite and perhaps because of this, it is home to a variety of ammonia-based lifeforms that have managed to adapt and even thrive in such conditions. Despite being exposed to a large dose of radiation by its parent, it has a powerful magnetic field which shields the surface from a great deal of its lethal effects and the vast majority of the native lifeforms have developed their own adaptations to this obstacle. As of present, a number of archaeological sites and foundations have been established across the moon in response to the not-so-recent discovery of the remnants of an ancient civilisation but despite this having been public knowledge for well over a decade, the UoC's government have remained fairly tight-lipped on the matter outside what information is released to the public domain. Military Composition:Armed Forces of the Commonwealth- Spoiler:
The UoC's Armed Forces are similar in structure to those of Britain or Australia in the 21st Century, albeit with a number of obvious changes. Immediately comes the infantry divisions where the bulk of soldiers are assigned whilst mechanised regiments see servicemen deployed in the UoC's advanced war machines. There are a few notable branches of the Armed Forces, however.
Sanctum Regiment: Whilst some might argue that segregating units of troops based on their species sends out a xenophobic message, the real purpose for this is anything but that; practicality. Due to the significantly altered needs of the Rakhan in comparison to Humans, a different set of equipment and weaponry must be adapted for their use, resulting in the creation of the Sanctum Regiment, which aims to integrate members of the species into the UoC's main armed forces.
Orbital Drop Regiment: The ODR is the modern day successor to the Parachute Regiment of Earth's bygone days, deploying its troops to the fields of operation through drop pods deployed from orbit. Unlike the rest of the armed forces, ODR troops undergo additional training in order to prepare them for the extreme missions they're often embarked upon and are often closely associated with both the RAF and the Navy due to the nature of their missions.
Special Forces Support Unit: An amalgamation of the SAS, SBS and the SRR of Earth, the SFSU is considered to be the UoC's modern-day Spec Ops unit with a grueling training process designed to phase out 90% of its recruits. The result is an elite fighting force capable of operating under almost any set of conditions in order to fulfill their objectives. SFSU troops are equipped with the most advanced technology that the UoC has to offer and are often seen deployed alongside both the Armed Forces, the RAF and the Navy when need be; a testament to their adaptability to operate in all manner of conditions.
The Royal Air Force of the Commonwealth- Spoiler:
Whilst some may view the RAF as an obsolete institution in the advent of naval-borne combat, few have been able to argue against its necessity in providing both the Armed Forces and the Navy with vital levels of support in the form of fighter and bomber craft, among other uses. The Royal Navy of the Commonwealth- Spoiler:
With its roots dating as far back to the British Empire and before, the Royal Navy serves as the bulk of the Commonwealth's forces with up to 64% of its total personnel being navy servicemen. There are, however, a wide number of separate branches of the Navy, all of which serve their own purpose.
Royal Marine Commando: The RMC serve as the Navy's own infantry force, albeit with a more selective process than that of the regular armed forces. The RMC have, in ways, been likened to the ODR due to their training and space-borne deployments and as such a certain rivalry as arisen between the two.
Royal Astronautics Division: The RAD is the Navy's specialist in operations performed in the depths of space. Whilst service personnel are typically given a degree of training in EVA, it's the RAD who are usually called upon to spearhead any operations that take place outside the confines of a ship and ensure things proceed as smoothly as possible. Total Personnel- Spoiler:
Active Personnel: 12,914,339 Reservist Personnel: 118,141,234 Service EquipmentWeaponry:- Spoiler:
SidearmsGlock 88Standard issue service pistol with a number of modular features. Used by soldiers and police forces across the UoC. SIG P320Deadly .50 caliber pistol, utilised as the standard sidearm among NCOs and above. AR-3 Submachinegun A modular SMG in wide use by pilots and police forces across the UoC. Assault Rifles, Battle Rifles and CarbinesH&K G12 Battle RifleDecade-old railgun, but nevertheless still issued to individuals in the armed forces. Powerful, but can not fire automatic or burst. BAE Systems SA40The SA40 (Small Arms for the 40s) is a BAE manufactured combat carbine that fires the 5.56x45mm railgun cartridge. It is reputed for its compact nature in comparison to alternative choices, enabling it to be easily used in the tight spaces found on most spaceborne environments. It serves as the standard infantry rifle among troops and law enforcement units. Heckler & Koch G131The H&K G131 is an assault rifle which utilises the standard 5.56x45mm cartridge. The rifle is well-known for its modularity and is capable of fitting a variety of roles from DMR to LMG, all with the ease of replacing its interchangeable components. As such, it serves as a popular weapon among specialist law enforcement units and the likes of the SFSU. FN SCAR MK37The FN SCAR Mk37 is a special operations battle rifle available in 5.56 (MOD 0), 7.62 (MOD 1) and .50 caliber (MOD 2) variants. A very expensive railgun to produce, but it makes up for the cost with its excellent performance in all environments. Sniper RiflesH&K 'Lambda'An unconventional rifle, the 'Lambda' fires 7.62x51mm antipersonnel rounds, and is fully automatic. Izhmash Snayperskaya Vintovka Dragunova 2336The Izhmash Dragunov Sniper Rifle 36 (SVD-36) is an advanced sniper rifle that rellies on pinpoint accuracy instead of the superior firepower of its competitors. Using the computerized targeting systems, untrained civilians have managed to break colonial records in marksmanship. It fires the proprietary 7.62x54mmG guided projectile. Heavy Weapons:M29 FlamethrowerColt S4 Stun RifleM247 Light MachinegunM100 Joint Explosive Weapon Vehicles:- Spoiler:
Light/Medium VehiclesForce Protection Ocelot 'Foxhound' Mk. IVOriginally deployed in the early 21st Century to replace the older Snatch Land Rover models as a modular light patrol vehicle built to protect the occupants against roadside explosives, the Foxhound still finds use among the UoC's Armed Forces as a light patrol vehicle and has seen few major design changes from its original designs, save for accomodating a pressurised environment in hostile environments and utilising a hydrogen combustion-based engine as opposed to earlier fossil fuel dependent models. Typically, the Foxhound is gradually being phased out in favour of newer, efficient models, though it is still heavily used in training operations and civilian agencies. BAE Systems M221 'Lima' Infantry Fighting VehicleThe Lima is a hybrid between an IFV and an APC, sacrificing some of its armor for mobility and crew capacity. Its main weapon is its 40mm Coil Anti-Tank Cannon, a heavy armor-piercing weapon that allows it to provide covering fire even against enemy tanks. The M2/R .50 caliber railgun mounted near the hatch can support troops at almost any range Heavy VehiclesChallenger VDescended from the Challenger 1 and 2 Tanks of the late 20th Century, the Challenger 5 has proven itself to be a worthy successor to its ancestors. MechsBAE Systems LM-02 'Raptor'An aging mech that has seen over fourty years of service, the Raptor was one of BAE Systems' first combat mech designs and performed so well that it is still used by some units today. Whilst lacking the heavy armour of later designs and lacking the capacity to house a pilot in favour of unmanned controls and autonomous AI units, it has served well as a light vehicle and is well-known for it's mobility compared to other mechs at the time. In addition to the missile pods mounted on the rear of the chassis, the Raptor possesses two retractible gatling cannons, a rotating peripheral which enables the 'painting' of targets and three rear boosters which enable the mech to achieve brief flight and stabilise landings when deployed from aircraft. BAE Systems AM-08 'Churchill'The Churchill is an all-purpose combat mech which has seen more mass-production than any other mech design within the UoC, due to it's efficiency and the relatively low cost to produce such models. Featuring a pair of 20mm gatling guns, missile pods and a rotating overhead dual-barrel anti-armour cannon, it is highly effective at holding its own in combat and is useful against infantry, light vehicles and even armoured vehicles when deployed in groups. Unlike earlier designs such as the Raptor, the Churchill is capable of both manned and unmanned operation. BAE Systems AM-10 'Rex'Dubbed by many as the 'true' successor to the Raptor, the Rex takes numerous design cues from its predecessor and heavily improves upon them. Where the Raptor lacked the heavy armour of modern mech units, the Rex appears to have sacrificed a small amount of mobility in order to keep up with competitors' designs and features a somewhat bulkier, yet stronger chassis. Another significant change from the original Raptor design was the addition of a cockpit housing up to two crew members but capable of operating with just one. Alongside the addition of the railgun, the Rex possesses a pair of 20mm gatlings and anti-tank cannons. It also houses a series of missile pods at the rear, whilst recent updates to the design have incorporated a prototype laser weapon. Unlike the Raptor, it possesses only a single booster at the rear for the purpose of performing brief 'jumps' and stabilising itself during airborne deployment. FightersLockheed Martin F-18/E 'Cobra' Strike FighterThe Cobra is a fourty-year old fighter design that has been rendered obsolete by advancements in the field of armour and weaponry and so it is being gradually phased out in favor of the Eurofighter Cyclone. Nevertheless, it remains a highly popular aircraft and the vast warehouses filled to the brim with the machines mean that as long as there are pilots to fly them, the Commonwealth can afford to send wave after wave of them against the enemy. They are most effective inside a planet's atmosphere, where their airplane-like design allows them to take advantage of air resistance instead of fighting against it. The F-18/E is the newest and most modernized edition of the craft, upgrading the outdated F-18/D. Eurofighter CycloneSlated as the distant ancestor of the Typhoon, the Eurofighter Cyclone is one of the Commonwealth's newest pieces of military equipment having only seen active service in the past five years. Its sleek design is intended to make it a small target for dumb-firing weaponry whilst also enabling it to perform tight maneuvers to evade hostile aircraft. It is fitted with a variety of modern armaments and is designed with recent improvements to armour and weaponry in mind, making it even more of a formidable opponent against older targets. However, their newer minimalist design has also rendered them less effective within a planet's atmosphere due to increased air resistance, henceforth they have mostly seen deployment in environments exposed to the vacuum of space. BombersBoeing F-5 'Eagle' Fighter-BomberThe decade-old fighter-bomber focuses heavily on the delivery of conventional explosives on vulnurable ships, or the precision bombing of airfields and tactical targets. Nevertheless, it is very much capable of the delivery of nuclear warheads, if the mission requires it, and some of the craft have been modified with ports to facilitate the deployment of target painters for nukes. Boeing B-23 'Raven' StratobomberOne bomber to rule them all. The FTL-capable Raven is capable of maintaining its stealth for days, navigating its way around enemy strongholds and defensive perimeters. Once it is in place, all is lost: it can carry enough nuclear warheads to level a country, or destroy a dreadnought. Its speed leaves much to be desired, however, and the FTL drive requires long cooldowns before being able to jump again. UtilityBoeing CH-48 'Chetco' VTOLThe Boeing CH-48 is named after the people of Chetco, a native Oregon tribe, and is the space capable offspring of the CH-47 Chinook. It is an ancient but notoriously reliable vehicle, having served in almost every armed conflict in the past forty years, and many of them are used as civilian cargo transports. Up to two main battle tanks, or fourty troops, can fit comfortably inside the hold of a CH-48. It is powered by a fusion reactor and uses a Buzzard scoop to use as reaction mass, giving it an almost unlimited range. Sometimes, the transports are refitted with an FTL drive to ferry cargo between systems. Boeing AH-12 'Slingshot' GunshipThe Slingshot is the exact opposite of the Chetco. Agile and armed, it is meant to provide cover for ground troops with a huge arsenal of weaponry, such as rail cannons, missiles and artillery turrets. It can carry a small squad of marines inside it, for rapid deployments, and is fueled by hydrogen fuel cells to give it unpararelled agility when it comes to assault gunships.
