Kakna

A jewel of life and sustenance in a system where nothing was, or ever could be. Only two planets orbited the yellow dwarf star at the system's center, and was merely a crisp rock that orbited closer and closer to it's star every single solar year. Kakna was brilliant, though. It was a masterpiece of life and creation; an oasis in the depths of time and space. An atmosphere of almost seventy nine percent oxygen, with twenty percent nitrogen and a single percentage of other gases, with an atmospheric pressure that enabled liquid water to form. Clouds of wondrous water, with four seasons and lush plant and animal life... What more could be asked for in a new colonial system?

Perhaps the ruins of an ancient alien civilization that relished in the knowledge of fusion power, advanced combative medicines, and energized weaponry? That would be too much to ask for...

But, this was Kakna. It was a world of mysteries, of magic and adventure. It already held a biological sentient species many thousands, or even perhaps millions, of years ago. Buildings and technologies of ancient times remain, ripe for reconstruction, reverse-engineering, and recolonization! During this very solar year Kakna would hold sentient life once again. This world, this majestic land, was it too good to be true?

That all depends on how your people react to the savage wildlife, born into this universe on a distant world, that is now evolved for the harsh Kakna jungles and forests. The ancient ruins are by no means safe either, for the technologically advanced remains of the civilization that inhabited Kakna beforehand continues to defend a homeland long lost...

It was then, with a bright burst of yellow, a heritage vessel, and a fleet of settler ships arrived above Kakna.

There were 6 men around a small table, eating food, some of the food had maggots crawling over it, but these men didnt care, they were having a feast, as most officers would on discovery of a planet of this magnatude.

"So I said to him, you can take your promotion and put it somewhere that the sun doesn't glare, little did he know I was fucking his wife!"

"Ah yes, infidelity. A subject which matters not to me, for after all, we are all the same in the eyes of god, and as the New Testament says, all sin is righteous when justified, and what more justification does one need to be holy other than the conquest to better his own nation, the nation of god?"

"You see Rufus, there are some things which I find greater than the nation in the service to god, as I'm sure you know our overlords have sent us to this planet, not us, they are all knowing, messengers of god, but have you ever wondered if there are others out there, other overlords?"

"Don't be preposterous!"

"Too much wine for this man!"

The group chuckled as the wooden interior of their metallic clad ship rumbled as another drop pod shot onto the ground of Kakna. As the commanders were talking, a full fledged civilian landing was going on over Kakna, with most of the civilians simply believing they were going to start a new life, and not their "wise angels" had sent them to find something on their behalf.

Did they know what the planet held? No.
Did they care about what the planet held? No.
Was the planet habitable? Yes.
Could they defend themselves? Yes.
Were they going to find out things about the planet? Probably.
Would people die trying to uncover its secrets? Definitely.

"An interesting little ship." Ponsonby quipped as he read over the initial report, he was expecting a far more advanced fleet to enter the system rather than what seemed like a makeshift opportunistic throwaway.

"What are your orders? Wanna just sink the bastards?" one of his more bloodthirsty staff officers asked, approaching his station with hands cupped behind his back.

"Not quite yet, I'd like to avoid a diplomatic incident if at all possible. The comms please, Mr. Prescott." whilst he handled his own men rather dryly his voice seemed quite a bit energetic in his open broadcast to the unknown fleet.

"Attention unidentified vessels, you are in an area under Armistice Treaty delegation, you are hereby instructed to cease all current activity and to immediately make your own designations clear. Any attempt to approach the planet will be counted as a violation of New Terran territorial integrity and will be dealt with accordingly. Repeat, cease all activity and identify yourselves immediately, we are authorized to use any available means to ensure our territorial integrity is maintained." a nod to one of his Communications Specialists ensured the broadcast was cut shortly thereafter, he looked back to a new group of officers who had swiftly assembled prior to his broadcast.

"Have the Rapier, Tenacity and the Leopard advance to cut them off, if the enemy disregards our warnings and continues their advance or attempts to conduct a landing they have full authority to destroy or disable any violating craft, let's hope they heard us."
a brief silence fell upon Ponsonby before he gave a curt salute to the men who swiftly descended from his station.

The Officers continued their chat when a soldier in a well made coat came into the quarters.

"Officers, we have been hailed."

He wheeled in a small phone on a well made trolley for the captain of the ship to pick up, it looked like a telephone except with a strange spinning rod at the top, probably some form of communications. He pressed a green button on the machine as he sat down listening to the message, after pressing the button his hand grabbed a glass of a fine year and gulped it down, he swallowed, satisfied.

"I do concur." he pressed a blue button on the machine so all the officers could hear. He swapped a track on his vinyl player in the corner of the room and as he fished sipping from his goblet. He cranked up his telephone and held it to his ear, pressing down on the red button on his phone and opening his mouth, licking the roof of his pallet so his words would be annunciated and clear.

What would come through the microphone sounded like one of the most aristocratic takes on human English you could ever imagine.

"This is the HSV King Montabottom, sealed in Dillangby and five time transport ferry of refugees, third of its class, second of its type and outfitted with a kitchen, basic amenity ports and ship docks." he sighed as he continued talking, causing his drivel to dive in pitch and pop back up again. "Outfitted also with a radio, in house radiators and a ship cooling system, basic and light gauss weaponry and wooden furnishings." He stopped recording and sent it. Then he started recording again as a servant filled up his glass with a *glug glug glug*.

He hit the record button again.
"I am Rupert Grinslycobble of the Grinslycobble lands and estates, limited, incorporated, Land Pact of 2316, Wholesale Bread makers. I represent the wholesome, god-loving and god-backed Great Heritage of Salvanar. I would be pleased to know more about your strange race... and your strange accent. Further more, under the radio bans and liesencing decree of 2308 I am not at liberty to recall my ships, as they are fitted with habitat systems rather than radio systems. My apologies, when I send a radio capable ship to the surface I shall have the recalled, in the mean time, no more ships will be launched. Please do not launch attacks on our vessels, as under Decree of article 86 of the Extra-viable War Methods Chapter on Justifications for Total War, we will have to film you destroying unarmed craft and show it to the galactic council, who will then demand a reason as to why you killed innocent civilians."

The ship that looked primitive had now started to record and send long range messages to somewhere else. It also deployed an anti-jam encryption to this.

Captain Ponsonby of the Type 112 CG-4 'Assembly' would surely receive an odd update from his communications officer. To the other species in the system, the signals coming from the planet surface would be unrecognizable and would easily cause communication errors and confusion. The same would go for the 'Assembly', as some of the ancient technologies present on Kakna were still active; coating the space around the world in a cloud of communication static.

Yet, for the 'Assembly', one communication signal would pierce through. A signal not heard by the New Terrans in many, many years..

Kal.

It was indeed a Kal'Bavakorian communication signal on repeat; transmitting the same message over and over again. By the looks of the communication algorithm, it was a distress signal. An active one, meaning that there were Kal'Bavakorians on the planet, although possibly not alive. At the same time, something was a bit off. It wasn't the same algorithms used by the Alliance, and the New Terrans would only have a rudimentary understanding of advanced Kal'Bavakorian communication technologies.

It was something worth checking out, for sure.

"Quite an odd sort, wouldn't you agree?" Commodore Ponsonby said to his executive officer with a smile.

"I'd say, we should take into account the fact that they might be lying just to make a try at the planet." his brutal compatriot returned, wearing an eternal frown.

"Oh I certainly hope not, we have atmospheric bombers just for that sort of contingency, the comms again if you will, Mr. Prescott."

Again a curt transmission was shot across to the strange vessel.

"Likewise, we would be interested in learning about your people as well. We find it quite unfortunate that circumstance must inconvenience your efforts in such a way and we will permit your craft to continue their procedures, I wouldn't tarry with that 'radio ship' either as any suspicious behavior or expansion past their predetermined landing areas will be answered with quite lethal force, we've been generous with the size of the said zones and the proper localized charts have been transmitted to your craft. If any defiance of these exceedingly generous conditions is detected you'll be free to upload any footage of our righteous self-defense to the Armistice Station, where our nation holds a Security Council seat, and I trust it will be disseminated appropriately. Out."

He turned back to his XO only to find him approaching rapidly with another uniformed crewman.

"Commodore, this is Ensign Li, he has some interesting developments to bring to your attention."

"Thank you, Mr. Singh. Speak frankly, Mr. Li."

"Very well, Sir, during your exchange with the alien ship we've intercepted a very interesting transmission." the abrupt end of his report was eased along with his presentation of a sheet to the Commodore who wasted little time in grabbing it, giving it a swift read.

"A distress call? Ah, the old Bavvies sent this one out."
he said rather cheerfully before Li spoke up again.

"Indeed, but something about this one is different."

"Oh? Do tell."

"It isn't using the same communication algorithms or even general frequencies for that matter, I'd recommend exercising caution in locating it's source."

The Commodore nodded, snapping a casual salute to the Ensign.

"Very well, thank you Mr. Li, that will be all." the salute was return and the officer swiftly returned to his station.

"Orders?" Singh began, no doubt already prepared for action.

"Have the task force continue their advance, have them scramble what atmospheric MRF's we have and ensure the designated transport craft are trailed on their way down, we will follow up on our promises. As for this 'signal', have the Cyclops deploy a recon drone to get us a live feed of the region in question, we do have it's location?"

"Of course, Sir."

"Superb. There's a contingent of special forces aboard the Swordfish, correct?"

"Indeed, Sir."

"Have them board shuttles and get them to trail the probe, by the time they get planetside we should have a feed on their insertion, I doubt these Bavvies could've survived for this long so it's only good and honorable soldiering to return their bodies to the homeland. Make it happen, Mr. Singh."

The XO preempted his superiors salute this time before departing to ensure the orders were put into action, before long the primitive ships would find themselves intercepted and tailed whilst a rapid reaction force made it's way to the planets surface. Little did they all know what interesting developments would follow their expeditionary interlude.

Grinslycobble put the phone down, dissatisfied at what had just happened. His officers looked to him sternly, he had never led them to dissapointing careers. He sipped at his wine, watching the burning candle light create imprints in his vision, as he looked elsewhere the candle light followed. He spun in his chair, looking out the back of the holo-windows in the back of the ship. He sighed.

"Our benefactors will not be amused gentlemen, which is why we need to spool up and get the hell out of here."

"Grinslycobble, we have limited resources, we cannot cont-"

"WE WILL NOT RETURN HOME WITHOUT NEWS OF VICTORY."

"But my liege, there is no possib-"

"We will find resources on the fly, we have enough conversion efforts aboard this ship to purify food. I care how arduous the journey might be, we will return home with news of a new colony."

"But the colonists, they're already down there!"

"Not all of them, sixty seven percent are down there, we will start anew with what we have on board."

"And what of the sixty seven percent we leave behind?"

"Their fate belongs to god now, there is nothing we can do for them."

On the lower atmosphere the ships of the Heritage pierced the skyline and slammed into a ravine, creating a makeshift village already running thanks to the home systems in the Ironclads, now their escorts would see that these ships had no way of returning to their craft, and as the settlers got out of their crafts, they were clueless, they simply went about attempting to gather timber, watch out for beasts and look at what they could see.

Kal'Bavalorian Distress Signal

13L; Kakna Ruins Excavation Site Frozen_dawn_by_dream_monger

The Kal'Bavakorian communication signal, only detectable by the New Terrans through the immense communication static that plagued the planet, lead to a distant mountaintop just around the planet's northern quadrant near one of the smaller metropolitan ruins, the city of Zatar, on Kakna. Once a small but bustling city that dealt with research and combatives; the ancient disaster that decimated the native sentients left the city in disrepair and with only the native predators, and the Kaknan's own odd automated defenses, to inhabit it. For many sentients coming to investigate Kakna, the city's were either off limits or travel was heavily restricted to only a few select groups. Ghost stories and tales of horror surround the main ruins, and Zatar was not left out of such a group..

Nonetheless, the source of the Kal'Bavakorian distress signal was about seven miles to the east of Zatar and seemed to come from the mountains itself. Once the New Terran rapid reaction force finished their burn into the planet's atmosphere, their radar would immediately pick up something of interest in the snowy mountain ranges..

A Kal'Bavakorian outpost, with a communications tower just a few hundred meters just outside it's snowy perimeter.

As the New Terran rapid reaction force began to near the mountain range, they would notice two things. The first was that the Kal'Bavakorian outpost had three landing pads sitting near it's outer walls. The two closed pads had Kal'Bavakorian dropships settled in with fueling lines attached to their port bays. The last one was completely open, although whether or not it was a good idea to land there could be decided by the second thing that was easy to notice.

The second thing, the most noticeable of the two, was that there were a series of bright green and blue flashes coming from the base in tune to the sound of plasma rifle fire. It didn't take a genius to figure out the outpost was under attack. But from what?

The Commodore and his staff stared as the lead ship of the Heritage motioned to leave it's people behind. At first the New Terrans perceived this as a sort of ploy before fully realizing the situation. The multirole fighter wing was called back, the New Terrans certainly couldn't annihilate their own people as new to the Empire as they may be. As the Commodore regaled his XO with tales of how a unique culture could be borne from cooperation and co-existence between these new settlers and ones of their own a very important development was occurring planetside which they remained rather oblivious to, such was the nature of military operations lacking in proper communication logistics.

The New Terran fleet overseeing the planet numbered about fourteen ships total, eight of which were combat craft whilst the rest served in auxiliary support capacities, they were now positioned in a defensive formation closer to the planet than their previous position as they didn't expect the Heritage to leave without making a concrete effort to dispute the planets legality in the possession of the New Terrans.

After at-least another half-hour of combat a massive explosion erupted on the mountainside, illuminating the entire valley with an impressive firestorm. The fighter escorts, under the advisement and deduction of the on-site commanders of 'Unit 112', began engaging the determined positions of a seemingly hostile force assaulting the Kal'Bavakorian base. Residual flames and large plumes of smoke covered the crater of where the ordnance landed as the ear-splitting sounds of the fighters rocked through the open area as they soared past overhead, replaced by the sounds of two drop-ships rapidly descending onto the outpost, their side-gunners following the Kal'Bavakorian tracers and firing on target to suppress this phantom enemy. All the while a signal continuously broadcast throughout the area on all familiar Kal'Bavakorian frequencies the New Terrans had access to:

"Comrades! We have come for you!"

"Comrades of Kal'Bavakor, New Terra fights for you this day!"

One of the drop-ships began to swiftly but cautiously descend to the free drop pad whilst the other circled, laying down suppressing fire over the whole mountain range where-ever the presumed Kal'Bavakorian plasma fire was observed. The landing process left them both open to AA weaponry both from within what they assumed was a Kal'Bavakorian base and from elsewhere, time would tell if this structure housed their allies of old or something far difference.

Without further-adue, any ships within the immediate area of the Heritage vessel would witness it brilliantly depart and leave its villagers behind. The villages on the ground had no idea what had just happened, and we eager to see what was going to happen next.

Troop Master Shahil Basa'Har grit her sharp teeth together as she watched the three-dimensional holographic display of the base before her. Dozens of tiny orange dots, signifying Kal'Bavakorian Sentinels, encompassed the entire inner sector of the base, while the hundred of grey dots that continued to surround the compound signified their nearly unstoppable foes. Unstoppable, in the sense, that the tide of hostiles had not yet ceased. The onslaught of monstrous machines had been flowing in from the direction of Zatar non-stop since last night. They'd lost contact with their recon and scribe team in Zatar around the same time; no doubt a coincidence.

The firebase shuddered somewhat in tune to the sound of the base’s second Plasma Acceleration Cannon firing a salvo at their incoming enemies. The two cannons in the firebase’s upper echelons were one of the only reasons the base had survived the night, amongst the tenacity and clear minds of her eighty or so Sentinels. The machines had managed to down one of her supply dropships, and overran the perimeter outside the base. Ammunition and plasma batteries weren’t close to low yet, but another few nights and they’d have to resort to their Slot Swords.

Troop Master Shahil Basa’Har stroked her mandibles for a moment, before a sudden communication channel opened on her command console. It was Flight Commander Jaka Tal’Un; the commander of Sentinel Flight Unvaou.

++-‘M’Lady, we’ve picked up incoming craft on visuals. They appear to be.. Human in design. Incoming transmissions from their craft.”-++

She saw them on her holo-console just as Commander Tal’Un opened the line: two white dots on her display were orbiting the facility. She quickly opened the incoming transmission line, and listened in to what these humans had to say. If they were Coalition, they’d be destroyed in mere seconds..

But alas, they were friendly. New Terrans, the old comrades in arms of the Kal’Bavakorians and a sight for sore eyes. They appeared to be engaging the enemy forces around the-…

Basba! One of the white dots suddenly disappeared after a stream of incoming fire, and it’s remained tumbled toward the ground outside the compound; the New Terran gunship destroyed in seconds by incoming enemy ground fire. The second craft was closing in on the compound and, as it appeared, was able to safely land on Landing Zone Three. A ‘ballsy’ move, as the New Terrans used to say, but with so much incoming ground fire she couldn’t blame them.

“Commander Tal’Un, get four of your reserves on that landing zone immediately and set up a security zone. I’ll be heading up there to meet our guests.”

++-“Of course M’Lady. I’ll send four from the rear flank immediately.”-++

Troop Master Shahil Basa’Har quickly grasped her nearby helmet and slammed it over her head. Securing the neck harness over her scaly throat, she sealed it and quickly made her way to the exit of the underground Command Center; a heavy protected and armored staircase that led to the courtyard above. With a plasma rifle already in hand, she rushed up the stairs and exited the castle-like building just as the New Terran dropship landed. The sound of acceleration and plasma rifle fire was nearly deafening to those without proper protection, and the ground shook from the Plasma Acceleration Cannon’s firing patterns, which sent streams of fiery plasma into the armies of mindless machines assaulting their facility. Even worse, fire from the crashed New Terran dropship just outside the bases perimeter licked at the compound's walls, yet did not threaten to cause further damage. The walls were developed to handle direct plasma attacks, so a mere fire would cause no damage.

The Troop Master quickly jogged over to the nearby landing zone, eyeing the now landed New Terran craft. She would receive quick bows from those of Unvaou Flight before, as a group, they turned to meet the New Terrans as they exited the dropship.

Kal'Bavakorian Firebase

The first drop-ship struggled to maintain a steady course, a fight it gradually lost as it toppled down to emit a loud crash by the walls of the outpost. It's a very rare occurrence that a dropship of such specs could be downed by ground fire but it wasn't entirely unheard of, the surviving soldiers took the loss considerably well. As the Kal'Bavakorians neared the grounded shuttle the New Terrans were already disembarking en-masse, the average M-7 Kaiming transport craft could comfortably transport 32 passengers with ample equipment with very little effort or compromise. The soldiers continued to disembark, making very little effort to interact with or acknowledge the awaiting Sentinels as they heaved crates and other equipment towards various wall sections.

Their Commander on the other hand, a man labeled on his uniform as 'Black', strode forward to shout over the gunfire towards the Troop Master.

"Don't you just love a battle!?!" he yelled, cracking a grin. He motioned towards a particularly gruff soldier struggling to carry a large crate over his shoulder.

"Yeah don't worry about my boys, they're getting right to work to reinforce your positions. If you've got anything to hide, you'd best make it clear now."

After shrugging off whatever response the Troop Master may have given at this point he barreled on mindlessly as automatic fire broke through the air just a few feet overhead.

"Yeah we got rocket launchers, MG emplacements, EMP launchers, thermobaric ordnance, mortars, anything you need really." he shot a pointed finger towards the direction that their fighter-bomber escort rocketed by only moments ago before casting a smiling glance back towards Shahil.

"R-12 Cuirassier, damn fine craft, it'll be making a turnaround very soon to hit this area again, my boys will make sure it lands accurate fire this time. The call has already been made and we've got a whole flight of those coming in to give us some primo fuckin' close air support, it's gonna get brutal!"

He threw a light punch towards the Kal Commander's shoulder before barking a final comment at her.

"So, where's your command post? Let's get set up."
